A new workforce strategy released by VACCHO aims to support a strong and able Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO) to deliver holistic health and wellbeing services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Victoria.
Launched at VACCHO’s recent Members Meeting on Wurundjeri Country in Kalorama, the Victorian Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing Workforce Strategy 2022 – 2026 (Strategy) was enthusiastically received by Members who see first-hand the need to strengthen the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing workforce.
The Strategy acknowledges the strong history of the ACCO sector and their role in providing culturally safe, responsive and holistic health and wellbeing services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Victoria. It has been developed in a way that supports ACCOs to exercise their self-determination, recognising the diversity in culture and knowledge in Communities, and that the greatest success comes from place-based, community-led and governed solutions.
At the meeting, Members expressed how important the Strategy will be for Community and the ACCO workforce and looked forward to hearing their voice through the strategy as it is implemented.
VACCHO CEO, Jill Gallagher, believes the Strategy will further strengthen and empower the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce to deliver much needed self-determined holistic health and wellbeing services to Community in Victoria.
“Through the Victorian Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing Workforce Strategy, we have a vision for a strong and able workforce delivering holistic health and wellbeing services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
This in turn is expected to improve health and wellbeing outcomes and improved health equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Victoria, while also providing strong employment opportunities and careers for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.”
